AIRPORT RECEIVES $1 MILLION FOR TAXIWAY

A grant from the Federal Aviation Administration worth more than $1 million will be the first step in expanding Williamson County Regional Airport, manager Doug Kimmel said.

The grant for $1,058,463 will be used to build a taxiway on the west side of the north/south runway.  Kimmel said he hopes the airport can start construction this summer and finish by the fall.

The taxiway would lead to the western part of the airport where Kimmel said the airport hopes to have an expansion that would include new hangars.

“For us, this is the first step in opening the western portion of the airport for future development,” Kimmel said.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Belleville, said in a press release that the funds will be instrumental in improving the airport.

“The airport is a key part of our regional transportation network and economic development efforts, and this work will enhance efficiency and safety,” said Costello, who is also chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee.

Kimmel said the airport hopes to receive additional funds in the future to further develop expansion.  He said further expansion could potentially increase interest from companies looking to bring business to Southern Illinois.

“This paves the way for any future interest,” he said.
